Growing up in the time of social media is both, a curse and a blessing. We have access to seemingly endless information about literally any topic imaginable. However, we often don’t use social media and the internet in general responsibly. Of course, the internet is not only a source of information but also a source of entertainment. It’s okay to spoil yourself, watching funny cat videos, yet if you don’t do anything more productively, you probably end up feeling bad about yourself after surfing the internet for several hours in a row.
Since I’m trying to use social media and especially YouTube more responsibly (or in other words, wasting my time more productively), I recently started watching Ted Talks. There are some really good ones out there, so today I’m gonna show you my favorites so far.
ARE YOU LIVING THE LIFE YOU WANT TO LIVE? I TAZ ALAM
This one is definitely among the top of my favorites! Taz talks about the difference between truly living and merely surviving and living your passions instead of playing the safe card. I think this speech is particularly valuable for Millenials!
WHAT MAKES A GOOD LIFE? LESSONS FROM THE LONGEST STUDY ON HAPPINESS I ROBERT WALDINGER
Spoiler alert: It’s neither money nor fame.
YOUR ELUSIVE CREATIVE GENIUS I ELIZABETH GILBERT
If you read my post about my favorite audiobooks, you may know that I absolutely love Liz Gilbert and her perceptions of creativity! This talk was recorded in 2009, not long after the publication of her bestseller Eat, pray, love.
SUCCESS, FAILURE AND THE DRIVE TO KEEP CREATING I ELIZABETH GILBERT
Another talk by Elizabeth Gilbert, five years after the first one. And still, she is as eloquent, authentic and humble as always.
DON’T STRIVE TO BE FAMOUS, STRIVE TO BE TALENTED I MAISIE WILLIAMS
Talent will carry you further than your 15 minutes of fame – in our fast-paced world, I believe this statement is true. It’s hard for me to sum up this motivating and inspiring speech, so do yourself a favor and just watch it!
GRIT: THE POWER OF PASSION AND PERSEVERANCE I ANGELA LEE DUCKWORTH
Some people are gifted with a higher IQ than others. Yet when it comes to success in life, there are far more important things than mere intelligence.
LOOKS AREN’T EVERYTHING. BELIEVE ME, I’M A MODEL I CAMERON RUSSELL
Such an important message! Sadly, many people who commented on this video apparently didn’t get her point.
INSIDE THE MIND OF A MASTER PROCRASTINATOR I TIM URBAN
To be honest, there isn’t much of a learning effect or advice in this Ted Talk in my opinion, yet it is one of the most hilarious ones I’ve ever watched!
CHANGE YOUR CLOSET, CHANGE YOUR LIFE I GILLIAN DUNN
Within the first minutes of this Ted Talk, I didn’t really think that I would like it but I eventually did. It’s a great reminder to celebrate the present moment instead of waiting for more special days.
HOW TO MAKE STRESS YOUR FRIEND I KELLY MCGONIGAL
This one gave me a completely new perception of stress. The speaker Kelly McGonigal, who is a psychologist explains in her speech how to respond to stress more healthily so that it strengthens us instead of pulling us down.
That’s it for now. I will definitely watch many more Ted Talks during the next couple of months, so I may do a series of this. Until then, I hope you got some inspiration on what to watch when you find yourself clicking on YouTube next time!
